Breaking Barriers – Rett Syndrome

Rett syndrome is a severe neurological disorder that mostly affects young girls one year after birth. According to the Rett Syndrome Research Trust, it can trigger seizures as well as loss of speech and motor skills.

The last time Denay heard her daughter call her “mom” was 10 years ago, when she started showing signs of Rett syndrome. Since then, her daughter Hannah lost much of her ability to speak and move on her own. But despite these obstacles, Denay and her family tell Medical Stories that they still managed to make Hannah feel loved and supported as part of their family.

Featuring renowned experts: Dr. Eric Marsh, professor of neurology and pediatrics and clinical director of the Orphan Disease Center, and Dr. Jeffrey Neul, director of Vanderbilt Kennedy Center.
